Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) Therapy

What is Exposure & Response (ERP)?

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) Therapy is an evidence-based therapy modality used to treat obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and specific phobias. ERP Therapy has been shown to be the most effective form of treatment for these conditions and can allow individuals to get their life back. Healing from these conditions isn’t something that can easily be done alone, support is needed to conquer challenges and truly heal.

Understanding the ERP Process

ERP is a process! Your therapist will begin my exploring resources, teaching distress tolerance skills, and coping strategies to manage anxiety. Next, you and your therapist will create what’s called an “exposure hierarchy” that helps you determine which situations are the most anxiety provoking and where to begin.

Once you’ve decided this, your therapist will help you by starting with the least anxiety provoking situations and more towards the more anxiety provoking situations. Your therapist will guide you in being exposed to these situations and responding in healthier ways. The therapist is able to help you challenge any difficulties and provide you support and encouragement along the way.
